Wallace Wood was born in Menahga, Minnesota, and he began reading and drawing comics at an early age. He was strongly influenced by the art styles of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon, Milton Caniff's Terry and the Pirates, Hal Foster's Prince Valiant, Will Eisner's The Spirit and Roy Crane's Wash Tubbs. Recalling his childhood, Wood said that his dream at age six, about finding a magic pencil that could draw anything, foretold his future as an artist. Wood graduated from high school in 1944, signed on for a tour of duty with the United States Merchant Marine before joining the U.S. Army's 11th Airborne Paratroopers in 1946.

Arriving in New York City with his brother Glenn and mother, after his military discharge in July 1948, Wood attended the Hogarth School for Cartoonists & Illustrators (now, SVA) and assisted noted artists Will Eisner and George Wunder prior to opening the Harrison-Wood Studio. After a few years of Romance, Crime and horror comics for a string of publishers, Wood came to great acclaim at EC where he excelled at every genre and became the world's top sci-fi comics artist. Wood moved on to be one of America's great humorist as the first star artist at MAD. He returned to the traditional comicbook format in the 1960s with Daredevil, THUNDER Agents and more before pioneering self publishing with WITZEND.
